Ipswich skipper interested in Ireland call

Ipswich captain David Norris has confirmed he would welcome the chance to play for the Republic of Ireland.

Norris qualifies to play for Giovanni Trapattoni's side through his mother and could come into contention following his fine start to the season.

He told the club's official website: "When Steve Staunton was the manager he contacted me and asked about my availability. Obviously I was born in England but my mum is Irish. They all love football so if the offer was there I certainly wouldn't turn it down."

He added: "At the same time, though, I'm not expecting anything to happen. They have got some good players and it's not something I am thinking about. If it happens it would be a bonus."
