Defender Stephen Jordan is pushing to make his Sheffield United debut against Preston at Bramall Lane.
Jordan, who joined the Blades on a free transfer in the summer, has yet to feature due to a calf strain but has been included in the squad and is likely to be named on the bench.
French full-back Jean Calve could also make his debut on Saturday after joining on a season-long loan from AS Nancy earlier this week.
Fellow defender Nyron Nosworthy recovered from a knock to play 76 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough last Sunday and is set to keep his place in the side.
Striker Darius Henderson and defender Ryan France (both knee) and midfielder Lee Williamson (back) all remain on the sidelines.
Preston boss Darren Ferguson looks certain to be able to call on defender Sean St Ledger for the trip.
The Republic of Ireland international is returning to full fitness after a hamstring injury sustained during pre-season.
He played the first 45 minutes of Tuesday`s Carling Cup win at Bradford but was withdrawn at half-time as a precaution.
Yet Ferguson said: "Sean was a complete precaution - he will be okay for Saturday."
Fellow centre-back Wayne Brown, a summer signing from Leicester, has yet to make a league appearance for Ferguson`s side.
He suffered a hip-flexor injury in pre-season and then picked up a slight calf strain. Midfielder Barry Nicholson remains a long-term absentee as he recovers from a leg injury.
