Sheffield Wednesday moved to the top of npower League 1 with a crushing 5-0 win at managerless Hartlepool.

The Owls took control of the contest early on, with Paul Murray and Giles Coke scoring to put them 2-0 up inside 10 minutes.

Neil Mellor (23) made it 3-0 before Marcus Tudgay (penalty, 74) and Clinton Morrison (90) compounded the misery for the home side.

Peterborough are also making a good early impression in their bid to secure an immediate return to the Championship.

Posh's 3-0 win at Plymouth - the other team relegated last season - was provided by goals from Craig Mackail-Smith (61 and 75) and Aaron McLean (77).

Oldham slipped to fourth after a goalless home draw with Yeovil, while fifth-placed Bournemouth were hit by a stunning Notts County comeback on the south coast - Craig Westcarr and Kevin Smith netting in injury-time in a 3-3 draw.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield moved into the top six and above Charlton with a 3-1 defeat of the south London side, Brighton moved up to seventh with a 2-1 success and Rochdale got their first victory of the season in impressive circumstances - winning 3-1 at Brentford less than 48 hours after their Carling Cup defeat to Birmingham.

Promotion favourites Southampton won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers, Tranmere drew 2-2 at Dagenham & Redbridge, and Leyton Orient claimed a 3-0 win over Exeter.
