Liverpool are set to renew their interest in Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez, according to reports.
Roy Hodgson had desperately tried to sign another goalscorer on deadline day in order to take the burden away from Fernando Torres.
But the Liverpool boss failed in his pursuit of West Ham centre-forward Carlton Cole and Fulham’s Bobby Zamora, as well as Germany hotshot Gomez.
News of the World alleges that Gomez had been heading to Anfield on loan with a view to a permanent £20 million move next summer.
However, Bayern pulled the plug on the deal just a day before the transfer window closed to leave Hodgson with little time to find a replacement.
The Reds are now supposedly hopeful they can thrash out a deal in January should the German club change their stance on the 25-year-old.
Gomez has found life difficult at Bayern since making a German record 35 million euro move to the Allianz Arena from Stuttgart last summer.
He is now thought to be keen for a fresh start elsewhere, and his agent commented last week that a move to Merseyside would be of interest.
Uli Ferber told German newspaper Kicker: "When a club like Liverpool enquires, their interest cannot be pushed off the table.”
