Roy Hodgson has hit back at claims that Rafael van der Vaart rejected Liverpool in favour of Tottenham.
The Dutch international revealed last week that he opted to move to White Hart Lane instead of Anfield. He said: "Bayern were not interested, but Liverpool were interested,
"In the end you have to have a good feeling, and with [Harry Redknapp] I got a good feeling.
"I am happy I am going to Spurs. I am going to give it my best and hopefully I will play a lot of games and be important for the team."
However, Hodgson has poured cold water on van der Vaart’s comments; stating that Liverpool in fact rejected the former Real Madrid midfielder.
"No, that's not true. Those stories can get very irritating,” said Hodgson.
"An agent rings you up to ask if you want to sign van der Vaart, you say 'No' and then the next minute you're one of the clubs that want to sign him.
"I apologise to van der Vaart if his agent gave him another story. I think he's a very good player, but he's not the profile of the player we were looking for.
"When it came up I said, 'No, we have players in his position.'"
