Tottenham are reportedly keen to sign Lazio striker Mauro Zarate.
The Italian media claims that Spurs were on the verge of launching a 25 million euro bid for the 22-year-old prior to the transfer window closing.
And despite withdrawing his offer for the Argentine - who has also been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal - Harry Redknapp has been tipped to make a January raid for the former Birmingham loanee.
Zarate's friend and South American football expert Jose Alberto told Italian Radio Six: “Personally I know that Tottenham would be willing to still take the player.
“About a month ago I spoke with someone who knows a lot in those parts, who assured me that Spurs were ready to offer around 25 million for Zarate. But [Lazio president Claudio] Lotito has always considered him unsellable.
“Spartak Moscow also asked me about him but Maurito wouldn’t agree to go there."
Tottenham endured a frustrating deadline day until they secured a surprise swoop for Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart, and could prove to be equally busy in the New Year as Redknapp again looks to bolster his squad.
Likewise, Roy Hodgson and Arsene Wenger will be keen to strengthen their attacking options - although a move for Zarate now seems unlikely.
Liverpool have been linked with January moves for Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez and French international Karim Benzema as Hodgson pursues another goalscorer to take the burden away from Anfield hero Fernando Torres.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly keen on Sevilla winger Jesus Navas but will have to battle with Chelsea if they hope to bring him to the Emirates.
