Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg has admitted he would rather move to Manchester United than Arsenal, according to Talksport.
Both clubs were interested in the stopper during the summer and thought they would be able to sign him due to Ajax’s financial problems.
However, Stekelenburg gave his word to the Dutch giants that he would see out this season in Amsterdam but beyond that his future is in the balance.
Ajax would have to be able to at least offer the Dutch international Champions League football, something they do not have this term.
The Gunners have been in the market for a goalkeeper all throughout the transfer window and were knocked back in attempts to sign Mark Schwarzer, Shay Given and Asmir Begovic.
Now Manuel Almunia has a great chance to prove to Arsene Wenger he is good enough to continue as Arsenal No.1 and any move for Stekelenburg will have to be shelved until the end of the season.
Sir Alex Ferguson is not in desperate need of a new keeper so is willing to be patient but sees the 27-year-old as the perfect replacement for Edwin van der Sar.
Van der Sar has reportedly given Fergie rave reviews about his compatriot and would love to see him between the sticks at Old Trafford.
