Northampton have completed the signing of Newcastle defender Ben Tozer on loan until October 16.

Cobblers boss Ian Sampson moved quickly to add the 6ft 1in defender to his squad following injuries to Dean Beckwith and Abdul Osman.

Sampson said: "He is a player with an excellent pedigree and someone who will do us a good turn over the next few weeks."

He added: "He was really keen to come and already his attitude to get stuck in and do well for this club has impressed me. I tried to bring him in last season but it didn't quite work out then and I am pleased it has now.

"Ben is a highly rated young player who will improve us over the next few weeks, and he will hopefully gain some experience that he will find useful."

Tozer is likely to go straight into the starting line-up to face Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.
