Michael Townsend's freak own goal sealed a 2-0 victory for Barnet in the battle of the Football League's two basement sides against Hereford.
Bees debutant Grant Basey nearly made a dream start with a rasping volley which whistled past Hereford goalkeeper Adam Bartlett's post after 10 minutes.
The Bees took a 14th-minute lead when Steve Kabba carved out a chance for Mark Marshall to stroke past Bartlett.
The visitors struggled to get a foothold into the game, and after Barnet went ahead, Bartlett had to be alert to block Kabba and keep Hereford in the match.
But the Bulls struggled to string together any coherent play after half-time and sub Mathieu Manset's blocked effort was the nearest they came to a lifeline.
Bartlett was left embarrassed when he completely missed Townsend's 78th-minute back-pass and failed to scramble the ball away from goal to ensure Barnet climb out of the drop-zone.
The home side turned the screw after Townsend's bizarre own goal and Bartlett denied Marshall to end a sorry day for Simon Davey's men.
