Wales winger Gareth Bale has called for Brian Flynn to be appointed national team manager full-time.

Flynn's short spell in caretaker charge has been far from successful with Friday's loss to Bulgaria compounded by a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland on Tuesday night.

But the squad have only spoken glowingly of the 55-year-old's input and, despite the results, performances have hinted at improvement after stagnation in the latter part of John Toshack's reign.

Tottenham star Bale, the stand-out Wales player in both games, said: "We have actually got quite a good team around us and Brian has done a good job in the 10 days he has been with us."

He added: "It's not a lot of time for him to do what he wants but I think he has done a fantastic job.

"In my personal opinion, I hope Brian does get the job. He's going in the right direction and, given time, I am sure he can work wonders."

Defender Danny Collins, who was recalled by Flynn after three years in the international wilderness, also wants to see the former Wrexham and Swansea manager continue.

The Stoke player, 30, said: "It needs to be sorted out. I have come in in the last couple of games and I have enjoyed it. Brian has had some good training sessions but it is disappointing, at the end of the day, that it is all about results.

"We have not managed to produce anything, which is disappointing for Brian. I wish Brian all the best whatever happens.

"There is a good spirit in the camp - that's what I have noticed coming back into it. Obviously you feel for Brian and the rest of the staff who are with us.

"If Brian does get the job I wish him all the best."
