Crewe manager Dario Gradi believes his side have to be regarded as promotion contenders after extending their unbeaten league run to 11 games with a 3-1 win over Aldershot.

Byron Moore finally broke the deadlock two minutes before the break with a stunning turn and finish into the bottom corner of Jamie Young's net. The Alex doubled their advantage 60 seconds later when Joel Grant applied the finishing touch to a superb team passing move. Anthony Straker pulled a goal back for Aldershot in the 52nd minute, converting Marvin Morgan's perfect centre from six yards.

Crewe restored their two-goal advantage soon afterwards as Luke Murphy crossed for Ashley Westwood to head home and Gradi said: "With the results we are picking up and the way we are playing it would be stupid to say we are not promotion contenders."

He added: "But all it takes is some back luck or injuries to key players and you are in trouble. If you had offered me seventh place at this point of the season I'd have taken it for sure.

"Aldershot were good and they had a go but we deserved the points. We played some good skilful football with quick, clever passing and our young players just keep getting better and better."
