Liverpool 'in the running' to sign Bundesliga starlet

Liverpool are one of the frontrunners to sign Mainz striker Adam Szalai, according to reports. suggests that - if Liverpool are serious about signing the 22-year-old - they will have to do battle with former Anfield boss Rafa Benitez as he looks to lure the 6ft 4in frontman to Inter Milan.

Roy Hodgson has been on the lookout for a new striker partner for Fernando Torres ever since taking over on Merseyside in July and was linked with a whole host of names before the end of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have found goals hard to come by so far this season and - after the recent takeover of the club by New England Sports Ventures - they are expected to invest in a new striker when the transfer window reopens in January.

Hungarian international Szalai would appear to fit the bill of a new target-man Hodgson so craves, but Inter Milan remain the favourites to seal his signature in the new year.

"No-one contests that Internazionale are a big club but the player is still very young, this is his first full season at Mainz and he has to progress," Szalai's agent told Nemzeti Sport.

"If there was an offer then it's likely that we would consider it. But at the moment the most important thing is that Szalai is happy to play at his present team."
