Colchester are assessing former Blackpool midfielder Joe Martin.

The 21-year-old, who can also operate in defence, played in the U's Essex Senior Cup third-round tie at Dagenham on Tuesday.

Martin started his career at Tottenham but failed to make an impact and joined Blackpool, where he made 26 league and cup appearances during his time at Bloomfield Road.

Martin, the son of former West Ham and England defender Alvin, has been a free agent since his release from Blackpool following their promotion to the Premier League last summer.

The left-sided player has also represented his country at international level, playing for England at both Under-16 and Under-17 level and is hoping he can win a contract with John Ward's men.
