Liverpool are ready to step up their interest in PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, according to reports.
The Sun suggests that Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson will use his £25 million transfer kitty in January to sign the £10 million-rated Dutchman, who has been earmarked to add some creativity to the Liverpool midfield.
However, Liverpool will have to battle with Barcelona for his signature as PSV attempt to offload the 24-year-old in the New Year before his contract expires in the summer.
New Liverpool owners NESV have made it clear that they aim to invest in exciting youngsters in the transfer market, and Afellay certainly falls into that category.
NESV owner John W. Henry told the Liverpool Echo: "Arsenal and Man U have depth that is young and capable. We do not.
"We have a lot of work to do there. A lot of work. And we will, but we have to be smart about it. We are here for the long term.
"Everything we do is for the long term. Our biggest responsibility is to bring in the right people to the club on and off the field."
