Robinson not ruling out return

Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson is enjoying his self-enforced absence from international football but has refused to rule out a return to England duty when Fabio Capello departs as coach.

Robinson caused a storm when he was named in Capello's squad for the friendly against Hungary in August only to withdraw and then quit the international game. He insists he made the right decision after becoming frustrated with a lack of opportunities.

"It was difficult because as a goalkeeper if you are not in the team or not close to the team you really have got no chance of playing," Robinson told talkSPORT.

"A manager likes to get a number one goalkeeper and settle with him for however long and it's slightly different for an outfield player.

"I thought at the age of 30, 31 years old it was time for me (to retire).

"I have done a lot of travelling with the England team and I was going to be making the numbers up in training as third or fourth choice wondering if something happened to someone else I might get a chance at some point."

Robinson has been in outstanding form for Blackburn recently and admits he is not missing England at all, but the former Leeds and Tottenham stopper conceded he may change his mind once Capello leaves after Euro 2012.

"I am reaping the rewards at Blackburn. I am really enjoying my football - I think my form shows that and I am in a good place at the moment.

"Never say never but let's just say I am enjoying retirement."
