Arsenal are in contention to sign Real Madrid hitman Karim Benzema.

Rumours surrounding the Real Madrid striker have linked him with an array of Premier League teams including Liverpool and Manchester United.

However, recent reports suggest that Arsenal could make a sensational swoop for the French international.

The striker has failed to impress at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho, resulting in him being unable to secure a spot in the starting squad.

Reports from Madrid are suggesting that Mourinho could be willing to put the 22-year-old striker up for transfer, as he looks to revamp his squad.

It is believed Arsenal will have to bid some where in the region of £20 million for the striker that cost Real £30 million to sign, as they aim to replace him with the Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente.

Although the Gunners in previous transfer windows have shown a determination not to pay large sums of money, recent profits for the North London club suggest Arsenal should have money to spend in January.

This is not the first time the Gunners have been linked with Benzema.

Last Summer both Arsenal and Manchester United were reported to be battling it out for the player. The Times reporter Duncan Castles wrote: "Arsene Wenger is ready to go head to head with Sir Alex Ferguson for the signature of Karim Benzema in the knowledge that the 21-year-old France striker would rather join Arsenal this summer than Manchester United."
