Newly appointed Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli is keen to land Blaise Matuidi as his first signature at Anfield.
The French international midfielder fits the bill of young and exciting talent, the type of player new Liverpool owners NESV are keen to bring to Merseyside.
23-year-old Matuidi made his first senior appearance as a teenager for Troyes in 2004, but signed for St. Etienne three years later for an undisclosed fee.
Reports in France claim that the player could instigate a move away from the Ligue 1 club in January, and Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has been promised funds that could be used in a £7 million move for the player.
Spanish and Italian clubs are also thought to be monitoting the player, but the Anfield club are in pole position after the arrival of Comolli in Merseyside.
Liverpool have a transfer war chest in the region of £35 million, and although an attacking foil for Fernando Torres is seen as the priority the Reds are still keen to strengthen in other core positions.
The Daily Mail reports that Spurs are also interested in the player, but Comolli's previous relationship with Matuidi at Les Verts is thought to hold the key to any Liverpool move for the player.
