Arsenal are allegedly ready to to swoop for Roma defender Philippe Mexes.
According to Itasportpress.it, the French international is set to leave the Stadio Olimpico on a free transfer in the summer but Arsenal are prepared to offer the 28-year-old a pre-contract to warn off any other potential suitors.
Arsene Wenger is understood to be keen to bolster his backline, and signing a player of Mexes' calibre on a Bosman would represent quite a coup.
Arsenal have had their fair share of defensive woes in recent times, with the long-term injury of Thomas Vermaelen coinciding with the departure of three centre-backs from the Emirates.
However, Wenger did bring French pair Laurent Koscielny and Sébastien Squillaci to Arsenal in the summer to try to compensate for Vermaelen's injury, but his squad still lacks depth in the defensive department.
Mexes has been linked with the Gunners for some time and would no doubt find himself at home among the French contingent at Arsenal.
