Roma playmaker Jeremy Menez has spoken out about his desire to play for Manchester United in the future.

Menez could have had his wish already - the Frenchman turned down a move to Old Trafford when he was younger.

The 23-year-old is under contract with the Italian titans until 2013 after signing from French side Monaco for £10.7 million in 2008.

But Menez has told Italian media "When I was 15 I wanted to play under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United but after much consideration, I decided it was better to join a less prestigious club.

The French hitman is ranging along in the capital, but he has big ambitions in his career. "We want to win the title," he told Ma Chaine Sport.

"However, I dream of being able to have another chance to join United, sooner or later."

Menez declined Manchester United and instead spent four years in the youth academy at Sochaux, and two years in the senior team before joining Monaco. He has represented France at every youth level and made the first of his two full international caps earlier this year.

The Roma star was recently compared to Brazilian superstar Kaka after a string of special performances, especially his starring role against Basel in the Champions League. But comparisons to the Real Madrid star are not lost on Menez who said after the match "Comparisons with Kaka? I do not know."

Manchester United would likely be interested as Ferguson tried to sign him as a youngster and his progress has certainly been impressive. With Paul Scholes set to retire in the not too distant future, Manchester United will need a creative attacking midfielder and Menez certainly fits the bill.

The Frenchman has enormous potential. He is a multi-talented attacking player with great dribbling skills, and a bid of £13 million would be enough to bring the French international to Old Trafford.
