Substitute Jason Roberts handed Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce a 2-1 victory on his return to Newcastle.

Roberts struck with eight minutes remaining to clinch Rovers' sixth successive victory over the Magpies after Andy Carroll had cancelled out Morten Gamst Pedersen's third-minute opener.

But midfielder Joey Barton was at the centre of controversy when he appeared to catch Pedersen in the midriff with his hand as David Hoilett was booked for diving.
