Injury-hit Southend earned a point at Shrewsbury as a fine angled volley from Anthony Grant three minutes from time sealed a 1-1 draw.

Grant`s strike made amends for his glaring first-half miss when he somehow steered the ball wide from three yards out.

Leading Shrewsbury scorer Jake Robinson also missed a golden chance early on when he lost control as he tried to round keeper Glen Morris.

But it was his pinpoint cross in the 47th minute that found Matt Harrold and his header back across goal found Mark Wright who scored his fifth goal in seven games.

Wright also tested Morris with a sharp left-foot shot which the United keeper did well to save at the foot of his left-hand post.

Southend edged the second half and Chris Neal failed to hold Grant's 25-yard shot before scrambling the ball clear.

Grant then found the net, Ian Sharps scraped the Southend bar with a header but United held on for a deserved point.
