Arsenal have sent scouts to Southampton to watch 17-year-old wonderkid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to the News of the World.
The pacy winger has been a revelation for the Saints this season and has been rewarded with his first ever cap for an England team, the under 18s, recently.
And Arsenal’s scouting network has been alerted to Chamberlain’s progress, with Steve Rowley making the trip to St Mary’s Stadium to watch him on numerours occasions.
The Gunners unearthed England international Theo Walcott while he was setting Southampton alight, and Tottenham snapped up a young Gareth Bale from the Saints so the South-Coast club’s pedigree is very good.
Manager Arsene Wenger will be hoping Arsenal’s good relationship with Southampton will give him the edge when competition arises but they want to move before anyone else, so an offer looks inevitable next month.
Chamberlain became the second youngest ever Saints player, behind Walcott, earlier this year when he came off the bench against Huddersfield aged just 16 years 199 days.
He now has 15 appearances under his belt, scoring four goals and it is likely the Gunners will loan him back to the League One side for the remainder of the season.
