Honduras has been a happy hunting ground for Latics

We not should let Hendry Thomas’s much talked about miss at the weekend detract from recent performances for Wigan because they have been superb.

Arriving from Honduras in July 2009 after what seemed like endless wranglings, we were all expecting Hendry to resume where his compatriot, Wilson Palacios had left off after departing to Spurs that January.

Wilson is a tough tackling but creative midfielder and can combine breaking up opposition attacks with not inconsiderable attacking flair of his own. Our appetites were whetted - we already had one other Honduran in Maynor Figueroa and he was great!

Hendry went straight into the first team but failed to impress immediately, his performances being more workmanlike than outstanding. Sure he was tough in the tackle (according to stats. one of the best tacklers in the Barclays Premier League last year) but seemingly lacking in vision - suffering somewhat in comparison to Palacios.

However Roberto Martinez stayed faithful and continued to play him, and sure enough, since the sidelining of James McCarthy, Hendry has delivered performance after performance, quietly impressing with his no-nonsense approach, but now adding the forward runs that he is famous for in his home country.

Anyone who witnessed him in the 2-0 away loss to United a couple of weeks ago - Latics down to nine men, would have seen Hendry’s endeavour and energy make us back up to at least ten.

Hendry Thomas could do a job for plenty of Premiership clubs - not necessarily at the Wigan end of the table either.

Maybe this is part of the issue with Wigan’s fans - we cheer the players on knowing that soon they will be departing to ‘better’ teams. Not very encouraging. For me, this all asks three important questions…

Why must we always sell our best players?

What are they feeding them on in Honduras?

Where do I get some from?
