Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a surprise move for Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a rapid promotion at the La Liga side after injuries to Cesar Sanchez and Miguel Angel Moya; grabbing his opportunity with both hands and, in turn, attracting the interest of a number of Europe's leading lights.
According to Spanish daily Sport, Sir Alex Ferguson was particularly impressed with Guaita's performance at Old Trafford on Tuesday as Valencia earned a 1-1 draw.
This reportedly prompted the Manchester United boss to enquire as to the availability of the stopper as the Red Devils continue to identify new 'keepers to bring to Old Trafford.
Manchester United are thought to be in the market for a replacement for current Old Trafford no.1 Edwin Van der Sar and have been linked with a number of potential targets including Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon and Schalke first choice Manuel Neuer.
The Dutchman is expected to retire at the end of the season and - despite Manchester United already brining Danish goalie Anders Lindegaard to Old Trafford - Ferguson admits he may add another to his ranks.
“We haven’t finalised our thoughts on the goalkeeping situation," the Manchester United supremo said after the signing of Lindegaard.
“Edwin has massive experience and you can’t buy that, so it’s a difficult one because he has been a great goalkeeper and will be hard to replace.”
Current Manchester United no.2 Tomasz Kuszczak has also been tipped to leave Old Trafford in the summer so the Red Devils are expected to step up their pursuit of goalkeeping reinforcements.
