Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine watched his side destroy Bristol Rovers 6-2 but insisted they can get better.

The Milan Mandaric era began with a bang as four goals in 23 first-half minutes sank the Pirates.

Irvine said: "It can get better. Some of our play going forward was terrific but some of our defending wasn't what it needs to be."

He added: "There were things we didn't feel we did well enough in defence - we were a bit ragged at the back at times.

"I was astonished that Clinton Morrison didn't score one of our six goals - and he is wondering how he didn't get a hat-trick. But he was terrific in his overall play."
