Marseille have conceded defeat in their pursuit of Rennes right-back Rod Fanni, leaving the way clear for Liverpool to swoop.
The French side have the player’s agent of being ‘irrational’ and have ended negotiations for the highly rated 29-year-old.
Fanni’s contract expires at the end of the season and Rennes are keen to cash in on him with two teams interested in taking him.
Liverpool have been tentatively linked, as have L’Om, but the Anfield side have yet to made a firm approach.
However, after Marseille pulled out of a deal and Glen Johnson became more unsettled at Anfield, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson readied to pounce.
Real Madrid are reportedly ready to make Liverpool an offer for their out-of-form England international and Hodgson would be tempted to bring in someone much cheaper to give himself more money to spend on other areas.
Marseille chairman Jean-Claude Dassier told RMC: "Today we can only be pessimistic. Fanni's agent is being irrational and it is doubtful a deal will now be done.
"I can't see any way it could be completed, except if the player decides to manage himself in a reasonable way.”
