Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker has admitted he would love to move to Arsenal, with rumours the club will offer for him.

The German international has been linked with the move in the past but committed his future to the Bundesliga in the summer. Now however he is ready to leave his homeland.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is currently looking to strengthen his central defensive options after new signings Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have struggled to adapt to life at the Emirates Stadium.

And the Gunners have already been thwarted in their attempts to bring Everton’s Phil Jagielka to North London as Toffees boss David Moyes rejected a £15 million offer.

Gary Cahill was another player Arsenal reportedly wanted to sign but Wenger has recently denied the Bolton youngster was ever on the Gunners’ radar.

Meanwhile, Werder have been poor so far this season and currently sit in thee bottom half of the Bundesliga.

With the team performing badly in the Champions League as well, Mertesacker is keen for a change of scenery and Arsenal would be the perfect destination.

“I think he would like to move,” a source close to the player told “Or let me say it like this – he would be interested in seeing other countries.”
