Liverpool have formalised their interest in Lille star Gervinho by making an official bid, according to reports.
The Reds have been linked with the 23-year-old Ivorian for some months and now, according to Tuttomercatoweb, have ‘made an offer’ in the region of €12.5 million for his services.
Gervinho has become highly coveted since playing integral role in taking Lille to the top of Ligue 1 this season and it would now appear that Liverpool are in pole position to land him in January.
Roy Hodgson is thought to have identified Liverpool’s lack of cutting edge as the issue most in need of addressing in the transfer window and is expected to bring a number of new faces to Anfield next month.
The Liverpool boss has been honest in his assessment of his current striking options and, after admitting his side rely too heavily on the goalscoring prowess of Anfield hero Fernando Torres, has been linked with January moves for a number of potential targets.
Bolton star Johan Elmander and West Ham striker Carlton Cole are both thought to have interested Liverpool as Hodgson looks to bolster his attacking options.
Along with Liverpool director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, Hodgson has been keeping tabs on a number of potential options with a view to increasing the potency of his squad as of January 1.
New Liverpool owners NESV are expected to back their manager with upwards of £20 million in his quest for reinforcements and are understood to be keen to see young talent brought to Anfield.
Gervinho would certainly fit with NESV’s criteria and could provide Liverpool with the extra dynamism they need in pursuit of a top four finish in the Premier League.
