Huddersfield winger Anthony Pilkington scored a wonder goal to settle a thrilling Yorkshire derby with Sheffield Wednesday in npower League One.
Pilkington curled in an exquisite shot from 25 yards midway through the first half but the visitors, who had not played since losing 5-1 to Exeter 16 days ago, were denied an equally-spectacular leveller when Clinton Morrison's stunning volley after 50 minutes was ruled out for offside in the 1-0 defeat.
Table-topping Brighton came from behind to snatch a dramatic 2-1 win at Exeter. Richard Logan gave the hosts an eighth-minute lead from Billy Jones' corner and the Grecians held their advantage beyond the hour mark but Glenn Murray headed the 64th-minute equaliser and Ashley Barnes grabbed the winner in the last minute.
Bournemouth turned up the pressure with a 3-1 win over Brentford.
Liam Feeney headed Bournemouth in front (11) but the bulk of the action was reserved for a six-minute spell midway through the second half.
Lee Bradbury's own goal (65) left the match all square, but he hit the bar at the other end before Feeney set up Marvin Bartley to make it 2-1. Shwan Jalal immediately saved Charlie MacDonald's penalty to preserve the hosts' lead and Steve Fletcher grabbed a late third from Feeney's cross.
Southampton kept up their pursuit as, after a goalless first half against Dagenham and Redbridge, Adam Lallana broke the deadlock two minutes after the break and Brazilian Guly made it 2-0 (75). Josh Scott pulled one back (84) but Rickie Lambert made it 3-1 in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Leyton Orient beat Colchester 4-2, Tranmere won an all-action clash with Carlisle 2-1, Notts County moved to within three points of Hartlepool with a 3-0 win over United at Meadow Lane and Chris O'Grady's brace earned Rochdale a 2-1 win at Oldham.
Elsewhere, Peterborough came from behind to rout basement club Walsall 4-1 and Paul Huntington earned Yeovil a 1-0 win over MK Dons.
