Tranmere edged to a 2-1 home victory over Carlisle in a game that saw three penalty misses.

Carlisle`s early pressure was rewarded with a 17th-minute penalty after Tim Cathalina needlessly handled James Berrett`s corner, but Peter Murphy blasted the ball over the crossbar.

Rovers went ahead against the run of play six minutes before the break when Ian Goodison powered a left-foot shot from 20 yards in off a post for his first league goal of the campaign.

It needed a fine save by Joe Collister from Gary Madine early in the second half to maintain the lead.

Tranmere wasted an opportunity to go 2-0 up on the hour when Ian Thomas-Moore`s spot-kick was saved by Adam Collin after Matt Robson tripped Joss Labadie. Another penalty followed for Rovers in the 69th minute after Lubomir Michalik tripped Lateef Elford-Alliyu. This time Aaron Cresswell stepped up but again Collin made an excellent diving save.

Berrett levelled things up after 78 minutes with a neat 12-yard finish but Tranmere edged ahead again two minutes later as Thomas-Moore made up for his penalty lapse with a close range shot after a cross by Showunmi.
