Danny Whitaker struck twice from the spot to give npower League Two leaders Chesterfield a 3-2 success at Southend.

Whitaker's first spot-kick and a Deane Smalley strike had put the Spireites two goals to the good before Craig Easton pulled one back for Southend.

But Whitaker's second sealed the win as Barry Corr's penalty was not enough for the home side.

It was a miserable day for managerless Stockport as they were thrashed 5-1 by Gillingham at Edgeley Park.

Cody McDonald grabbed a hat-trick for the Gills with Andy Barcham and Curtis Weston also on the scoresheet.

Wycombe dropped to third as Clayton Donaldson's double saw them lose 3-0 at Crewe while Shrewsbury lost 3-1 at home to Morecambe as a Dean Holden own goal, James Spencer's effort and Laurence Wilson's penalty gave the visitors the win. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff got a consolation for the Shrews.

Three goals in six minutes saw Barnet beat Bradford by the same score at Valley Parade.

Luke Oliver's header had put the Bantams ahead but Rob Kiernan's 61st-minute own goal was quickly followed by efforts from Anwar Uddin and Ricky Holmes for the visitors.

Tom Craddock struck five minutes from time to give Oxford United a 2-1 win at Aldershot while Joe Jacobson got the only goal of the game as Accrington Stanley beat Bury while Northampton and Cheltenham played out a 1-1 draw.
