Man Utd claim controversial win

Ryan Giggs' second-minute penalty condemned Kenny Dalglish to a losing start as Liverpool manager as Manchester United recorded a 1-0 FA Cup triumph over the 10-man Merseysiders, who also had Steven Gerrard sent off.

Almost two decades after ending his first stint as Anfield chief, Dalglish has been charged with reviving their fortunes.

Things went against them from the off however, with Howard Webb awarding a penalty went Dimitar Berbatove went down under a challenge from Daniel Agger in the first minute of the match.

Ryan Giggs cooly dispatched the penalty past Jose Reina, who dived correctly to his left but was beaten by the strike.

Steven Gerrard was sent off close to the half-hour mark, his two-footed challenge being met with a controversial straight red from the official.

Johnny Evans hit the woodwork on the stroke of half-time as United looked to score a second, but their in-ability to kill the game off always left the ten-man Reds with a chance.

Fabio Aurelio saw a free-kick well saved by Tomasz Kuszack as Liverpool toiled, but that was the closest they came as Sir Alex Ferguson's side progressed into the fourth round, where they will face Southampton.
