£30 million Villa pair targeted as Giggs and Scholes replacements

Published Add your comment

Manchester United will make a shock £30 million swoop for Aston Villa pair Ciaran Clark and Ashley Young, according to reports.

United look unlikely to buy in the January transfer window but could spend big in the summer, with a goalkeeper also a priority.

With the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Owen Hargreaves, Thomas Kuszczak, Michael Owen and Wes Brown all on the way out of Old Trafford in the summer, Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking to freshen up his squad.

And midfield stalwarts Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are not long from retiring so the Manchester United manager has earmarked Clark and Young as their long-term replacements.

The pair have made a significant impact at Villa Park this term, despite the Midlands club having a poor season so far.

Clark, a product of Aston Villa’s academy, is one of a number of youngsters given their chances this year and has been heralded as the future of the club.

Meanwhile Young, signed for Villa from Watford, has been a transfer target for Liverpool during the early stages of this month but the Anfield club are unlikely to follow through on that interest.

Instead, Manchester United will get the upper hand on their Liverpool rivals once more by being able to provide Champions League football next season.
