Oldham manager Paul Dickov admitted his side were second best after they were hammered 6-0 at home by second-placed Southampton.
Saints eased into a comfortable 2-0 lead at half-time with goals from Alex Chamberlain and Adam Lallana before turning it on after the interval as Guly Do Prado, Richard Chaplow, Rickie Lambert and Lee Barnard all got their names on the scoresheet.
Dickov said: "We met a very good team with very good players and, although we've got good players ourselves, we didn't compete with them. It`s very disappointing to get beaten by six in any game but we were second to everything all over the pitch and at times it was men against boys."
He added: "They looked fitter and stronger and had better players on the night but this is a learning curve for all of us. After a defeat like this you take a look at yourselves, but we`ve done okay this season and it`s about how we react.
"We will do a lot of soul-searching but this game has gone, we can't change it and we have to come back a lot stronger."
