Chelsea have 'entered talks' with reported Liverpool target Neven Subotic, according German daily Bild.
The Borussia Dortmund defender is hot property at the moment - having also been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid - but the Premier League champions appear to be leading the chase for his signature.
Chelsea have reportedly launched a bid of around €21 million for the Serbia international, who is gaining quite a reputation for himself in the Bundesliga.
A deal for Subotic would certainly shore up the Chelsea defence, with the Blues currently short on proven centre-backs.
Liverpool were initially thought to have been in the race for the 22-year-old after it was reported that the Anfield club had been closely monitoring his progress.
Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli was understood to have identified Subotic as a potential transfer target, but speculation regarding a move to Anfield was soon nipped in the bud by the player himself.
"Why should I leave such a team like Dortmund?" he said - as reported by the Daily Mail. "I have not heard anything from Liverpool."
Despite seemingly losing out on Subotic to Chelsea, Liverpool are still believed to be in the market for defensive reinforcements in January.
Liverpool have had their fair share of defensive woes of late after were hit with the news that Anfield stalwart Jamie Carragher would be out of action for three months after dislocating his shoulder against Spurs in November.
Centre-back Daniel Agger also reportedly wants out of Anfield so Liverpool could do well to bring in at least one defender during the transfer window.
