Chelsea and Tottenham are ready to battle it out for reported Liverpool target Josip Ilicic.

According to, the London rivals have emerged as the favourites to capture the £15 million-rated Palermo midfielder, although Liverpool are still reportedly waiting in the wings.

Liverpool had been linked with a move for the 22-year-old in November by German website 4-4-2 after a number of sensational displays in his debut season.

However, it would appear that Liverpool have yet to show an official interest in the Slovenian, and Chelsea and Spurs have now moved ahead of the Anfield club in the pursuit of his signature.

"Yes, there are three very big Italian clubs who have shown interest but Chelsea and Tottenham, this is different," a source close to the player told

"Let's be very clear, he is confident of playing in any league in the world. But he is happy where he is for now.

"He has a great relationship with the manager [Delio Rossi] and chairman [Maurizio Zamparini], but he is only 22 and has ambition."

Along with potential competition from Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs are expected to have to fight tooth and nail for Ilicic with Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan - which serves to highlight how impressive the Slovenia international has been this season.

Should he move to the Premier League - whether it be to Cheslea, Spurs or Liverpool - the youngster is likely to thrive in English football having drawn comparisons to Reds midfielder Joe Cole.
