Chelsea are on the verge of signing Benfica's Brazilian defender David Luiz according to the Daily Mirror.
Carlo Ancelotti wants to refresh his defence and has identified Luiz as his prime January target who plays centre-half but can also fill in at left-back. Chelsea have struggled for stability following the departure of Ricardo Carvalho last summer.
One player who could be heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal is Paulo Ferreira. The Portuguese full-back has put in a string of average performances this season and Ancelotti is looking to use him as part of a £21million deal.
It has been reported that Benfica rejected Chelsea’s first offer of £16.5m, but the West London club have since added Ferreira to their newly proposed offer in a bid to shift the Lisbon club’s stance.
Benfica recently announced they had already signed Luiz’s replacement, 24-year-old Brazilian Jardel, who joined from Olhanense.
Chelsea are desperate to sign the 23-year-old who has been an ever-present for Benfica this season, appearing 23 times. He also has four caps for Brazil and played in their 1-0 loss to South American rivals Argentina.
