England striker Jay Bothroyd is in talks with Newcastle according to the Daily Mirror.
The Cardiff star is one of Alan Pardew's top targets Newcastle want to offer him another crack at the Premier League.
Bothroyd is out of contract in the summer and is now free to talk to clubs with a view of signing a pre-contract agreement. Other clubs including Everton are believed to be interested but Newcaslte look to have own the race.
Bothroyd has 36 goals in 98 league games for Cardiff who look set to win promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history.
Newcastle have made their intentions clear to the Welsh club and are looking to continue talks following the Tyne Wear derby on Sunday lunchtime.
It has been reported that Bothroyd will triple his £10,000 weekly wage should the deal go through during the transfer window.
The Cardiff forward was called into the England squad by Fabio Capello for the friendly against France in November and came on as a second-half substitute replacing Newcastle's Andy Carroll.
