Arsenal chase Bordeaux's star defender

Published Add your comment

Arsenal are targetting a move for Bordeaux central defender Michael Ciani after scouts watched him against Marseille last weekend according to Metro.

Manager Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new central defender due to injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and Sebastien Squillaci and was previously rumoured to be interested in West Ham captain Matthew Upson.

Ciani made his France debut last March against Spain and he is set to be Arsene Wenger's latest French aquisition as they try to test Bordeaux's resolve to keep the 26 year-old.

French sources reported a scouting team from Arsenal present in the stands at Marseille's Stade Velodrome as Marseille beat Bordeaux 2-1 in Ligue 1.

Before joining Bordeaux in 2009, Ciani had spells at both Auxerre and Lorient as well as Belgian club Charleroi.

However, some Arsenal fans and critics believe that Wenger should be putting his money and thoughts in to an experienced defender rather than one that may take time to adjust to the nature of the Premier League.
