Liverpool have been maintaining a line of contact with Manchester United target Steven Defour.

The Belgium captain has long been on the radar of Sir Alex Ferguson and is thought to be keen to eventually seal a move to Manchester.

He is, however, in regular contact with Liverpool…well, that is to say 'in contact' with Reds' flop Milan Jovanovic, who played with the 22-year-old at Standard Liege.

"Sometimes I hear something from Steven Defour,” said the Serbia international. "He supports me in Liverpool and I support him now that he is injured.”

Liverpool, though, are known to have been monitoring Defour in the past but a source close to the player as previously stated he would avoid a move to Anfield in order to fulfil his dream of playing for Manchester United.

“There are many big clubs interested in Steven but he does not want to play for Liverpool at this moment,” the source told Goal.com UK.

“For the last two years Manchester United has been his number one choice and if he plays for Liverpool he is unlikely to fulfil that dream because of the rivalry between the teams.

“He would love to play under [Sir Alex] Ferguson and there may not be another chance if his next move is not to Manchester United.

“But both clubs are watching him very closely and he is flattered by all the interest and takes it seriously.”
