Fulham have rejected a bid for midfielder Zoltan Gera.

Skysports.com understands that the one time Liverpool target was the subject of an offer from Italian side Sampdoria, but the bid was rebuffed by the Cottagers.

Gera's current contract with Fulham expires in the summer and - while Roy Hodgson was in charge at Liverpool - he looked likely to seal a deal to Anfield, according to reports in the Hungarian press.

However, since Hodgson's departure from Liverpool, they are thought to have retracted their interest in the Hungary international, who wants to leave Craven Cottage in order to gain regular first team football.

"My situation is tougher than ever. I don't feel good and I play rarely," Gera is told daily Nemzeti Sport.

"I want nothing more than to play but I can see I have less and less chance for this here at Fulham.

"I like the club and the city very much but I don't think it is impossible that I will leave and I'll continue my career at another club.

"If I have the chance I'll leave but at the moment I don't have these possibilities."

Gera is likely to find himself on the bench tonight as Fulham travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League.

A win for the west Londoners would see them climb above Liverpool on goal difference and take them to the relative safety of 11th place.

Should Liverpool claim the three points at Anfield, then they would rise rapidly into the top seven and seemingly have their season back on track.

The Reds are showing signs of gradual improvement under new Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, and the addition of new faces in January could see them launch an assault on the European places.

Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Ajax striker Luis Suarez and Aston Villa winger in their pursuit of reinforcements, and it looks like they will bring couple of new recruits to Anfield by the end of the week.
