Newcastle hope to secure the loan signing of Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa before the window shuts, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 24-year-old midfielder is out of favour with Gerard Houllier at Villa Park and could leave Villa Park before Monday's deadline.
He will be allowed to leave after making just six Premier League starts since joining from Manchester City in August as part of the deal that saw James Milner go to Eastlands.
The two clubs are now reported to be in discussions about a loan switch for Ireland and the deal will hinge on Newcastle paying a significant slice of Ireland's £65,000-a-week salary.
Ireland scored four goals in six caps for the Republic of Ireland before retiring in 2007.
The Irish midfielder spent five years at City before joining Villa.
