Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer bid for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to fill the void left by the departing Edwin van der Sar.
According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils have drawn up a list of candidates to replace the Dutchman - and Reina is on their shortlist.
Reina has established himself as arguably the best goalkeeper in the Barclays Premier League since joining Liverpool in 2005 and is known to have an admirer in United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Spaniard has, however, outlined his commitment to Liverpool in recent weeks and believes there are 'exciting' times ahead at Anfield under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish.
"It's an exciting time and we still have half of the season remaining so there are a lot of points at stake,'' said the Liverpool stopper. "We want to get as high as we possibly can in the league. It is really competitive and we have to keep this up."
Should United bid for the 28-year-old come the summer transfer window, then Liverpool are likely to rejected any approach - having already shown their resolve over the past few days by rebuffing Chelsea's offer for Fernando Torres; outlining their intention not to sell their best players.
Liverpool owners New England Sports Ventures have pledged to keep their prized assets at Anfield, as well as investing heavily in the playing squad, so United may have to look elsewhere for a new top stopper.
Danish stopper Anders Lindegaard has already signed for the Red Devils but he is not expected to fill the no.1 jersey, so United will be on the lookout for a reliable gloveman come the summer transfer window.
Ferguson always had a sense that Van der Sar would quit Old Trafford this at the end of the season - admitting as much upon the signing of Lindegaard.
“We haven’t finalised our thoughts on the goalkeeping situation," the United supremo said.
“Edwin has massive experience and you can’t buy that, so it’s a difficult one because he has been a great goalkeeper and will be hard to replace.”
Current United no.2 Tomasz Kuszczak has also been tipped to leave Old Trafford come the summer window, so the Red Devils are likely to be scouting a number of potential signings.
One name that United have been frequently linked with is Schalke 'keeper Manuel Neuer who, according to the Daily Mail, could make a £24 million switch to Old Trafford.
