Commons: Debut strike was no fluke

Kris Commons scoffed at suggestions his debut goal for Celtic in their 4-1 Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen at Hampden owed more to luck than judgement.

There were only six minutes gone when the Scotland winger, drafted straight into the Hoops side after finalising his move from Derby on Friday, picked up the ball outside the box and sent it over the head of Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.

When asked if his effort was intended as a shot, Commons, 27, replied: "You've obviously not seen my goals - yes it was a shot. I do that kind of stuff in training and luckily it came off."

He added: "I saw a wide area of the goal towards the back stick and thought 'why not?'

"Alan Thompson (Celtic coach) told me to be positive and to have a go anywhere around 25 yards out, and luckily for me it hit the back of the net.

"I found out I was playing at quarter to two and I was surprised given that the team had played so well against Hearts in midweek," added Commons.

"But the gaffer had faith in me to do a job and I was happy to repay him.

"I thoroughly enjoyed it, we managed to get four goals in the first half and so it was a great start to my Celtic career.

"But I've got to carry that on. Hopefully it's not a one-off and I can find that sort of form throughout the season."
