Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly ready to lock horns as they both chase Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente.
According to the Mail on Sunday, the Londoners have already launched an ‘astonishing’ £26 million bid for the 25-year-old, but Liverpool are ready to renew their interest as Fernando Torres’ future hangs in the balance.
The Spaniard had a transfer request rejected by Liverpool on Friday after Chelsea had offered £35 million for his services, but he is still trying to engineer an exit from Anfield.
Chelsea are expected to return to Liverpool with an improved offer before tomorrow’s transfer deadline and the Reds are reportedly willing to consider a bid in the region of £50 million.
Should Torres depart Anfield, Liverpool will be left with little time to find a successor, hence, are allegedly considering swooping for Llorente.
Ajax hotshot has already joined the Liverpool ranks, but the Merseysiders want another forward if Torres leaves, although they will have to fight tooth and nail with Tottenham to sign Llorente.
Spurs appear to be ahead of Liverpool in the race for the Spain international as Harry Redknapp looks to add another proven goalscorer to his squad during the transfer window.
The Tottenham boss has already been to scout Atletico Madrid star Diego Forlan but the Uruguayan’s hefty wage demands mean a move to White Hart Lane would appear unlikely.
And, with Forlan turning 32 this year, he hardly has age on his side, so a Tottenham move for Llorente may prove to be a shrewder investment in the long run.
