Chelsea are reportedly preparing to make a deadline day move for Liverpool target Dimitri Payet.
According to the Daily Mail, the Londoners made their move for the France international last night as they look to make a big impact on the final day of the transfer window.
Chelsea are ready to smash their transfer record in order to bring Liverpool striker Fernando Torres today and could also add Saint-Etienne winger Payet to their ranks before the 11p.m cut off point.
Payet, who is valued at around €8.5 million, was known to be a target for Liverpool in their pursuit of attacking reinforcements in January but they have now reportedly set their sights elsewhere, although remain keen on to bring him to Anfield in the future.
Liverpool director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, is known to be an admirer of the 23-year-old, having worked closely with him at Saint-Etienne, but has identified other targets - namely Ashley Young - to solve the Reds' left-sided issues.
The apparent withdrawal of Liverpool from the race for the former Le Havre forward could pave the way for Chelsea to seal a deal before the close of play today, but they will face competition for elsewhere.
Paris Saint-Germain are willing to battle Chelsea for Payet after the sale of Stephane Sessegnon to Sunderland freed up extra funds, but both parties will have to move quickly as the deadline fast approaches.
