Gregory Van der Wiel's proposed move to Arsenal was reportedly scuppered after Liverpool swooped for Luis Suarez.

According to, despite Ajax's financial constraints, they are unwilling to lose all of their star names in January, so Van der Wiel's immediate future was settled after Liverpool signed Suarez.

“He will be staying at Ajax,” the 22-year-old's agent, Hakim Slimani, told

“With Luis Suarez leaving for Liverpool, the club do not want to sell and will not allow him to leave.”

Liverpool and Ajax agreed a fee rising to €26.5 million for the Uruguayan on Friday, ending weeks of speculation over a proposed move to Anfield.

It was confirmed today that the 24-year-old had passed a medical and agreed personal terms with Liverpool, although whether or not he will make his Anfield debut alongside Fernando Torres remains to be seen.

The new Liverpool striker's former teammate, Van der Wiel, has been heavily linked with Arsenal since his impressive displays for Holland during the World Cup.

However, Arsenal will now have to wait until the summer at least if they plan to launch a bid for the right-back, who has also been linked with Manchester United.

The €10 million-rated defender has himself admitted he would be open to a move to Arsenal should the opportunity eventually present itself but is happy to bide his time for the moment.

"Of course it's nice to read that Arsenal are interested," he said - as reported by

"I consider myself a good fit for the Premier League.

"Robin van Persie has told me many stories about the Premier League, Arsenal and Mr [Arsene] Wenger. Maybe he can put in a good word for me."
