Serie A star and Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has appeared as a surprise target for Manchester United.

With Paul Scholes’ future still in doubt after stalling on a new one-year extension to his contract, the Red Devils have begun the search for his long-term successor.

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a sensational bid to tempt the Italian international to Old Trafford in the summer and is prepared to pay up to €40m to make it happen reports goal.com.

With new American owners at Trigoria, Roma fans will be hoping that any approach is rebuffed as the club look to build for the future, and establish a top team capable of winning major titles.

In order to make that possible they will unlikely want to sell one of their prized assets, with De Rossi’s leadership skills making him a suitable future captain of Roma, and natural successor to Francesco Totti who is in the twilight of his career.

Such attributes will also be attractive propositions for Ferguson as he looks to strengthen his midfield options, so much so that some reports in the English press say that Manchester United would be willing to let Federico Macheda and Anderson head in the opposite direction in a players-plus-cash deal – but not the full amount of €40m.

It will be a sad day when the one-club man Scholes pulls down the curtain on his trophy-laden Manchester United career that has spanned over 17 years.

But with names such as De Rossi linked with a move to Old Trafford, they can rest assured that the future is still bright, as United show no signs of easing up on their continued pursuit for Barclays Premier League dominance.
