Liverpool defender target Jose Enrique will cost £12 million, according to reports.

The Spanish defender has admitted to being flattered with regards to interest from another of high profile clubs, with Liverpool and AC Milan thought to be at the front of the queue for the 25-year-old left back.

"It is flattering that Liverpool are interested. I’ve also heard that Manchester United and Aston Villa have asked about me," said the player recently, according to imscouting.com.

Now, the Daily Mail claims that the Toon have told Milan that they will have to pay £12 million to prize the player away from St James' Park. The Italian giants are thought to be keen on bringing in fresh blood to the San Siro in an effort to change the aging face of the club.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has hinted at summer additions, with the Anfield legend set to continue spending the money invested by new owners NESV.

The Merseysiders are keen to strengthen in a number of core areas, and a left back has been highlighted as a priority after the failed Paul Konchesky spell at Liverpool.

Glen Johnson has filled in admirably, but the England international is seen as a temporary solution in the position and Liverpool director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, is thought to have highlighted Enrique as the answer.

Alan Pardew is keen to keep the player with the Magpies, and may be reluctant to sell to a Barclays Premier League rival. However, Liverpool could look to negotiate a deal at the end of the season.
