Manchester United defender Wes Brown will make just his third Premier League start of the season against Liverpool on Sunday as a replacement for the injured Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand has been hampered by a calf injury he aggravated in the warm-up before United’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves last month and subsequently missed England’s friendly with Denmark and the Manchester derby.
And in the wake of Nemanja Vidic’s stoppage time red card at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, Sir Alex Ferguson has been forced to turn to Brown, with Jonny Evans also on the sidelines with an ankle problem.
"I don't think Rio will be fit for Liverpool," said Ferguson. "Wes Brown will take over. He has great experience."
Brown has made over 200 appearances for United since signing as a trainee in 1996 but hasn't made a league start since November's visit to Aston Villa.
